The epidemiology of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) differs by sex, with a greater risk of kidney failure in men. New data suggest that sex differences in kidney metabolism may contribute to these differing outcomes.

In adults with chronic kidney disease, increased plasma levels of TCA cycle metabolites positively associated with male sex, diabetes and all-cause mortality and negatively associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Among adults with diabetes, women without DKD had higher pyruvate levels than men with or without DKD and these levels positively associated with eGFR and negatively associated with all-cause mortality.
