Comparison of circuits over time in Canadian practice

Evaluation of circuits in Canadian practice based on surveys in 1957 and 2020 was used to identify the common types and whether there was any change over time. Three-stage circuits were considered along with a measure of circuit separation efficiency. The rougher-scavenger-cleaner and rougher-cleaner-cleaner still dominate, together comprising over 60% usage. Correlation against circuit separation efficiency offered one reason with other factors also discussed. The 2020 survey showed increased use of the rougher-cleaner-cleaner/scavenger (R-C-CS) circuit with CS tail discarded attributed to a benefit to process control through isolation of rougher and cleaner bloc chemistries. A variation placing CS on a second stage cleaner rather the normal location on the first cleaner was analysed with possible advantages outlined.
