1 INTRODUCTION

I was recently asked to address this question in an invited seminar. Like many of these invitations, the task at hand provokes serious thought, attention and reflection. Firstly, I considered what are the attributes of a world-class nursing school, and, secondly, I reflected on why this question matters.

I have had the honour and privilege of working at several world-class universities and most notably my experience as the dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing was both informative and inspirational. The Johns Hopkins Hospital and School of Nursing both opened in 1889 heralding a new era in both medicine and nursing. The founders of Hopkins nursing, M. Adelaide Nutting, Isabel Hampton Robb and Lavinia Dock established what would become a model for nursing education not only in the United States but internationally (Nutting, 1910). The ranking, influence and impact of the nurses at Johns Hopkins University are a testament to these strong foundations. I have drawn on my experience and the published literature to consider this question; finally, I reflect on why promoting world-class nursing schools is important.
