Figure 1. Map of southern Anniston, Alabama (outline), and surrounding areas. Air sampling sites are indicated by round dots, and landfills by triangles, and the PCB plant site is indicated by a square. Railroads and major highways are indicated. This map is reproduced with permission from ref (11). Copyright 2003 American Chemical Society. Figure 2. Map of Illinois (left) showing St. Clair County in red and outline map of St. Clair County (right) showing Sauget, Illinois, in red. The gray areas in the right map are incorporated areas. This map is from Wikipedia. For scale, the north–south distance of Illinois is ∼660 km. Figure 3. Map of the Hudson River. PCB contamination started at Hudson Falls and Fort Edward in the north and extended to Troy in the south. The distance from Hudson Falls to Brooklyn is ∼320 km. (22) Figure 4. Map of the west side of Bloomington, Indiana, showing three PCB-contaminated landfills, Bloomington’s Winston-Thomas wastewater treatment plant (closed in 1983), the co-located Interim Storage Facility (ISF), the Illinois Central Spring (ICS) Treatment Plant, and the old Westinghouse (now ABB) production facility. (32) The scale of the map’s border is ∼10 km by ∼12 km. The proposed incinerator site was ∼10 km south of the ISF site. Ron Hites was a chemist and Distinguished Professor at the Paul O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He was a Fellow of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and also founded the Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry. He published 500 articles and co-authored several books, including a textbook. Marta Venier is an environmental chemist and Assistant Professor at the Paul O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. In her research, she employs analytical chemistry and mass spectrometry techniques to study the fate, transport, and behavior of persistent organic pollutants, including both legacy and emerging pollutants, in the indoor and outdoor environment and in consumer products. The authors thank Mark H. Hermanson for helpful discussions of an early version of the manuscript. This article references 45 other publications. This article has not yet been cited by other publications. Figure 1. Map of southern Anniston, Alabama (outline), and surrounding areas.
