A new study has identified significant differences in gut microbial communities between infants that are later diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disorder and those that are not. The >20-year study followed a cohort of 16,440 Swedish children from birth, 1,197 of whom developed a neurodevelopmental disorder, including autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder or a speech disorder. The findings suggest that infection and antibiotic use in early life, among other risk factors, contribute to the link between gut dysbiosis and future diagnosis of a neurodevelopmental disorder.
